Samuel N. Macferran, Jr. MD

Dr. Macferran was born in Hartford, Connecticut. His family moved to Texas in the 1960s and he graduated from high school in the Spring Branch School District, surrounded by the ever expanding city of Houston. As a teenager, his interest in having a career of helping people developed from the combination of his church’s teachings, his family’s beliefs and volunteer work at a low-income housing project in the 5th ward of Houston.

His formal post-high school education includes receiving: a Bachelor of Science degree in biology and chemistry from Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas; a Master of Science degree in physiology and biophysics from the University of Houston; post-graduate course work at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. After earning the MD degree from the University of Arkansas in Little Rock in 1983, he returned to Texas and did pediatric residency training at the Bexar County Hospital District and University of Texas Medical School in San Antonio. In 1986, he started working with pediatricians Dr. John Foster Sr. and Dr. W. C. Watson III; thus, Midland Pediatric Associates was created. Dr. Macferran and Dr. Watson have had a friendship that spans more than 45 years.

Over the years, Dr. Macferran has discovered that he enjoys teaching. He has taught adult Sunday school classes for more than 15 years and was a community college instructor in Ft. Smith, Arkansas for 5 years. While at the community college, he was the principal author of a textbook for the nursing program at that school. He takes the opportunity at every child’s/adolescent’s visit, whether well or sick, to teach something to the patient and their caretakers. He has a special interest in taking care of adolescents and is a member of the section on adolescent medicine of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Due to his interest in pediatric emergency medicine, he became the Medical Course Director and affiliate faculty of the nationally taught Advanced Pediatric Life Support Course for the first 15 years of that course being offered in Midland, TX.

As a medical student he was selected to join Alpha Omega Alpha, the honor medical society. He is an active member of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Texas Pediatric Society. He has been both a member and in leadership positions of the Midland County Medical Society, Midland Memorial Hospital and the former Westwood Hospital in Midland.

Dr. Macferran and his family made Midland their home in 1986. His daughters both graduated from Midland High School and went on to have professional careers of their own. In his spare time, he enjoys his dogs (a Labrador retriever, ‘Chili’, and a toy Australian shepherd, ‘Boomer’), gardening, church activities, cooking, playing bridge, traveling and playing the bagpipes. He and his wife Mary, delight in having good times with their children and grandchildren.
